Ben is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Vanderbilt University's Department of Pharmacology and Center for AI in Protein Dynamics. A graduate of Baldwin Wallace University (BS, Chemistry & Neuroscience) and Vanderbilt's Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD), he completed his doctoral work in Chemical and Physical Biology under Prof. Jens Meiler, developing and applying computational approaches for cheminformatics and biomolecular modeling. In April 2024, Ben opened an independent laboratory at Vanderbilt University.
Research in the Brown Lab is focused on developing computational tools that integrate concepts across disciplines (informatics, artificial intelligence, biophysics, applied mathematics) to understand, probe, and manipulate biomolecular motion at scale. Ben is particularly interested in developing scalable, generalized in silico methods to predict the potency and efficacy of small molecules and peptides in ultra-large chemical libraries. Drug discovery efforts in the Brown Lab are consequently heavily linked to protein dynamics.
Ben and his team are very interested in applying computational techniques to design new therapeutic strategies for opioid addiction and overdose, as well as safe pain management. They are also interested in precision medicine, especially understanding mutation-driven conformational changes in oncogenic EGFR signaling complexes.
